Connecting from Off-Campus

As many of the Web-based databases, electronic books and electronic journals provided by the Sheridan Libraries are limited to computers on the JHU campus network, JHU affiliates need to use one of the two options listed below (the proxy service or VPN) for off-campus access to materials licensed by the Sheridan Libraries.  Remote access to Sheridan Libraries materials is limited to current Johns Hopkins University affiliates.  Please see the JHU Information Technology page for more details here: http://it.jhu.edu/remoteaccess.html

Proxy Service

Proxy
service requires no configuration on the user's part.

When you click on a link to an online library resource, the proxy checks whether your computer is on campus or off.  If you are working on campus you won't notice anything. If you are off-campus you will first be sent to the JHED login screen. Enter your JHED username and password to be passed through to the resource you wanted.  Please see the FAQ page for more information about the proxy.

Note:  If you get a "Permission Denied" page after you have authenticated with your JHED ID and password, you will need to go into your profile in the university portal and check your campus affiliation.  To do this, log into the portal and go to the My Profile icon in the upper left hand side.  The option to select a primary campus is at the bottom of your profile view (those with online courses must still select a campus).  Verify that you have a campus affiliation selected and click Save myProfile. Go into your browser and delete all the cookies and clear the cache.  Restart your browser.  It may take a few hours for the update to be propagated in JHED.

JHConnect:  a Virtual Private Network

Note:  JHConnect is administered by IT@JH and not by the Sheridan Libraries.  It is primarily used to access networked resources on campus, such as shared drives or remote desktop connections, which are normally restricted by campus firewalls.  As such, it is not being specifically maintained to allow the use of library resources remotely.  The Sheridan Libraries recommend that JHU affiliates access library resources via the proxy service.

JHSecure has been retired as of June 30, 2009.  Please use JHConnect instead and read this FAQ for more details.

To use the VPN client, you must download it, install it, and then run it, entering your JHED ID and password where prompted before you can access the library's resources.  Please log in to the portal to download the software.

If you have not established your JHED password yet, you will need to do so.  To retrieve your JHED ID and then establish a password, please go to the JHU portal at http://my.jhu.edu.  Search for your name.  Your assigned login ID displays in your record.  To create your password, click on "First Time Logon" tab and follow the prompts and record all elements for your files (secret question and answer, password).

Technical assistance with JHConnect is available from the Hopkins computer support staff.
