Department in the 1970s.

Biographical Sketch

William Bullock Clark was born in Brattleboro, Vermont on December
15, 1860.  He received his A.B. from Amherst in 1884 and his Ph.D.
from the University of Munich in 1887.  While pursuing his
doctorate, Clark also studied in London and Berlin, and was a field
surveyor with the geological surveys of Great Britain and Prussia.

Clark came to the Hopkins Department of Geology (the present Earth
and Planetary Sciences Department) in 1889, became the department
chairman in 1892, and was promoted to full professor in 1894.  In
addition to his responsibilities at Hopkins, he served as a
geologist in the United States Geological Survey, organized the
Maryland State Weather Service, and established the Maryland State
Geological Survey.

On October 12, 1892, Clark married Ellen C. Strong of Boston.  They
had four children, Helen, Marion, Edward S. and Atherton.  Clark
died on July 27, 1917 of a stroke, and was survived by his wife and
children.

Scope and Content Note

The papers of William Bullock Clark consist of three series:
correspondence, invoices, and a scrapbook, all arranged
chronologically.  The correspondence spans 1900-1925 and is
primarily pro forma letters regarding the exchange of geological
studies between Maryland Geological Survey and other similar
agencies.  The materials Clark received in exchange were used to
build the Geological Department's library.

The invoices are from G. E. Stechert and Company, book dealers.
Clark ordered items from them for the departmental library.  The
invoices span 1903-1910, with the bulk covering 1909-1910.  There
are a few letters with the invoices which answer queries Clark made
about the availability of certain works.

The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings collected by Clark which
cover his personal and professional life (l888-l9l7).  The
clippings document Clark's wedding, his efforts to start a natural
history society in his home town, directorship of the Maryland
Weather Service, and his role in planning Maryland's exhibition at
the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago.  Clippings
that were together, unpasted, at the end of the book, have been
photocopied onto acid free paper.
